Theodore Roosevelt was William McKinley’s Vice President before McKinley’s assassination in 1903. Henry A. Wallace was Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Vice President from 1941-1944. Millard Fillmore was Zachary Taylor’s Vice President when President Taylor died in 1850, and didn’t even get the nomination of his own party for the Presidency in 1852. Martin Van Buren was Vice President under Andrew Jackson from 1832 to 1836, and was elected President from 1836 to 1840. He lost to the William Henry Harrison Whig ticket (“Tippecanoe and Tyler too”) in 1840.
