Though Harry F. Byrd received 15 electoral votes in the general election, he was not an active or declared third party candidate. George Wallace ran against Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey in 1968 as a southern regional candidate, under the banner of the American Independent Party. Robert LaFollette ran as a Progressive in 1924 against Calvin Coolidge and John W. Davis. Harry Truman had challenges from two “third party” candidates in his contest with Thomas Dewey; from Strom Thurmond as a “States Rights” or “Dixiecrat” candidate, and Henry A. Wallace as a Progressive Party candidate. And “Populist” James B. Weaver ran against Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison in 1892.
