WHAT IS YOUR THIRD PARTY I.Q.?

QUESTION FIVE - ANSWER DETAILS

3. The American or “Know Nothing Party”

Millard Fillmore managed to get eight votes in 1856 running as a candidate for the American or “Know-Nothing” Party. Believe it or not, this party actually rivaled the Republican Party to determine which political party would take the place of the crumbling Whig Party as the main opposition to the Democratic Party. When the American Party could not commit itself on slavery, the Republicans moved into prominence, and the American Party faded away after the election. None of the other parties listed ever received an electoral vote.
